The Shan Hai Jing and the I Ching emerged from the same ancient Chinese understanding of how reality is structured. The five mountain sections of the Shan Hai Jing correspond to the five elements. The five elements correspond to specific trigrams and hexagrams of the I Ching. The Southern Mountains align with Li, fire. The Northern Mountains align with Kan, water. This is not coincidence. Both texts encode the same cosmic architecture using different symbolic languages. One speaks in mountains and creatures. The other speaks in broken and unbroken lines. Understanding both together reveals a pattern that neither shows alone.
