When Yu the Great tamed the flood, the Responding Dragon Yinglong carved the rivers of China with its tail. Those river channels and mountain ridges are what feng shui calls dragon veins - longmai - the pathways through which qi flows across the landscape. The Shan Hai Jing's mountain descriptions are essentially the oldest surviving map of these energy pathways. Every mineral deposit, every water source, every mountain god's domain marks a node in a vast network of living energy. Modern feng shui practitioners are still reading the same map, often without knowing its source.
